Scotland’s Capital
Edinburgh is probably my favourite city in the UK. I’m a bit biased, because I lived there for over 2 years in what I guess you’d call my prime. I was 25 when I arrived and 28 when I left. During that time I got to know a lot of Edinburgh’s bars, amongst other things. Since I lived there I’ve been back a couple of times with work and once on holiday, but those were all ages ago, and I was well due another trip to Edinburgh in 2024.
On this trip it was a promised weekend away with younger child and a friend of theirs. I sort of did that deliberately because Minimus likes a museum or two, and doesn’t like to spend all day walking. So the two of them spent the weekend buying books and looking around shops and museums. I provided the funding and transportation, as I often do.
A Place to Stay
I grabbed a couple of rooms at the Premier Inn on York Place. I got a rear facing room on the top floor, which meant I had an excellent view “down the hill” over the Forth and across to Fife. The kids were a bit lower, so they could only see the back of houses from their room.
Getting There
We went up in my trusty Mercedes. The hotel didn’t have a car park, so we left it in the underground parking at St James Place, which was fine. It’s safe, with controlled access and cameras everywhere. We had to make a couple of heavily-laden walks though.
The Caches
Edinburgh is chocker with Adventure Labs. More than plenty to keep me busy. The number of actual physical boxes I found was quite small, as there aren’t that many in the city centre. Still, four days yielded over 150 finds. That was good, given that I didn’t do a lot of caching on the Sunday.
Extras
There was plenty of eating out, a walk up Arthur’s Seat, and a visit to Cadenhead’s whisky shop. Oh, and I walked past where I used to live and visited a few bits of the city I never went to when I lived there.
