Objectives

Time for the traditional “last act” of my caching year – the writing of the 2021 Caching Diary.

After such an awful year in 2020, where we all had to occupy ourselves with stuff we could do from home, I was looking forward to a somewhat more productive caching year in 2021. I still didn’t really plan anything, because it was still pretty unclear how the pandemic was going to progress. So I vowed to do my bit whilst not getting stressed if the world stayed in lockdown.

I enjoyed the caches that I found and the days out that I had. There were a few cracking days spent in the company of people I’d not cached with before, and this definitely helped to re-ignite the spark.

2021 eventually was a somewhat improved year compared to 2020. Global pandemics aren’t very good for the caching statistics. The pandemic lockdowns gradually became the stuff of legend. Plus I managed to find the time and energy to meet up with friends and go out caching in groups more often.

I began the year by grabbing myself a new GPS device. It wasn’t strictly necessary, I guess, but I like a new toy every now and then. Some of the highlights were the first London Calling event, the mega in Lincoln and the Pokemon-based series up near Warwick.

So here we go. A whistlestop tour of my year in tupperware, in the form of a list with links to specific blog posts for the longer days (i.e. those where the caching was significant enough to warrant an individual post). You will notice that a couple of months were quite quiet, despite the new toy.

Statistics

  • January – 72 finds
  • February – 0 finds
  • March – 0 finds
  • April – 85 finds
  • May – 142 finds
  • June – 72 finds
  • July – 41 finds
  • August – 430 finds
  • September – 156 finds
  • October – 73 finds
  • November – 73 finds
  • December – 79 finds

Summary

So there we have it, my 2021 Caching Diary. So what did I actually achieve:

  • A total of 1,223 finds
  • No new countries
  • 16 days ticked off my Shifty Fifty Challenge
  • Just one day of more than 100 finds

It was a decent year, given the previous one. I got back into the swing of it and I had a couple of excellent mega events to attend. I haven’t (still) finished the Difficulty/Terrain grid and I still haven’t finished the “Full English”.

So, here is the usual pretty matrix of all the days in 2021 that were significant enough to write a whole post.
