What Events?

Over the course of a few years I’ve visited quite a few geocaching events of the “non-traditional” style. By that I mean not regular run-of-the-mill events, CITO’s or (even) the new Community Celebration ones. No – proper big-sized Megas, Gigas, and others, including the GPS Maze and (as of 2025) the revamped Block Party type. Geocaching HQ does like to invent weird concepts (or at least, they used to in the old days). They seem now to have focussed introducing new icon types by recycling old ones. Presumably that makes life easier for third-party apps.

Anyway, that’s all by-the-by. The purpose of this post is to celebrate the quite large number of large-sized events I’ve done.

A few of these (in the UK) were done on individual days, but over time it became more of a thing, and I got into the habit of travelling for a weekend or an entire week just to attend an event. You’ll see a mix of those. You’ll also see that they’ve taken me the length and breadth of the UK.

I also haven’t shied away from going overseas for them. I’ve done Mega events in Belgium and France and a Giga in Germany. I’m soon to add a Block Party in the Netherlands.

Some of them were parts of repeated series, and others were on-offs, or ones where I only visited just one from a series.

Long Running Series

Key series I’ve taken part in include:

  • Geonord – A series in Northern France running 2015-2018 – I missed the first one.
  • UK Megas – I’ve done loads of these despite them regularly conflicting with family holidays as they’re always the first weekend in August.
  • Piratemania – An excuse (for some) to dress up in costume, drink a lot and pretend they’ve lived a life sailing the high seas in search of doubloons and other booty.
  • Halloween Hides and Creepy Caches – An autumn series that run for a few years from about 2011 to 2015, organised by a team in Northamptonshire
  • Geolympix – Periodic Mega events generally held in Southern England
  • London Calling – Held every two years beginning in 2021
  • Brugse Beer – The Bruges Bear events, held annually in, well, Bruges. I went in 2017.

So here are all the post relating to Mega and Giga event days. I hope this list will continue to increase steadily.
