Munich 2014
A long weekend in August 2014 spent attending the first-ever Geocaching Giga Event, hosted in the iconic Olympic Stadium in Munich. It was a milestone for the geocaching community, and we were keen to be part of it. The whole weekend revolved around geocaching, with plenty of time spent exploring and meeting fellow cachers.
Travelling and Staying
Our base for the weekend was the Hotel Daniel on Karlsplatz. The location was perfect — right in the heart of Munich with easy access to public transport and plenty of places to grab food and drink.
The journey there was something of an adventure in itself. We travelled on the infamous Gigabus, a private charter coach that set off from Milton Keynes. The route took us through France, Belgium, and Luxembourg on the way down, giving us time to catch up with friends and soak up the excitement. The return leg was just as scenic, passing through Austria, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland before getting back home.
Activities
The weekend was almost entirely dedicated to geocaching. The Giga Event itself was buzzing with activity, and the Olympic Stadium provided an epic backdrop for the event. Aside from the event, we managed to fit in a good number of caches around Munich, making the most of the great weather and local sights.
The Geocaching
This was the main reason for the trip — a true celebration of geocaching at the Giga Event. We joined in on group caches, swapped stories, and enjoyed the camaraderie that comes with being part of such a large gathering. The scale of the event and the number of participants was unlike anything we’d experienced before.
