A New Area

To my shame, Scandinavia is an area I haven’t visited since I lived in Gothenburg in 1990 for a summer. I’d certainly never been there as a geocacher. So it was time to address that 34 year absence. I only ever previously visited Copenhagen on short weekend trips, once from The Netherlands in 1989, I think, and one from Gothenburg in 1990. So another visit to Copenhagen in 2024 was more than due.

The plan was to spend a “long” week based in Copenhagen, making trips to various local places of interest while I was there. Because Daughterus Maximus managed to sponge a free trip out of me, we did take some time on the “out” days to do a bit of touristy stuff, although a bit more might have been better.

A Place to Stay

I booked a room at a Best Western not far from Copenhagen Airport. I chose it because all the hotels in the city centre were either shabby-looking or expensive (or sometimes both). The one we picked was, shall we say, functional. The breakfasts were decent and there was a nice restaurant next door. And it was about 2 minutes walk from the nearest stop on Copenhagen’s spangly metro.

Getting There

Clearly we flew. From Heathrow. It’s a bit too far to drive, even for me. In any case, Denmark is one of those excellent places where you can get everywhere by train at very reasonable prices. You can, in fact, get to Sweden by train. So I wouldn’t have needed my car. That also meant, of course, that I didn’t need to rent a car either.

The Caches

A map of geocaches in Copenhagen is truly phenomenal. You can’t see the streets for icons. The city centre block is totally full (mainly with labs). To the south, on Amager there is pretty much a puzzle on every street corner. We didn’t get even close to doing the place justice. That’s despite making 520 finds in 7 days of geocaching. I could go back for another month and barely leave the city.

Extras

We managed to make trips to the fantastic cathedral at Roskilde and also across the water to Lund. And no trip is complete without a train ride up to Helsingør. And, of course, we did a bunch of touristy things in Copenhagen.
