I Never Get Bored Up Here

We went to the Lake District for our main holiday in 2023. No quantity of holidays in the Lake District can be classed as too many.

A Place to Stay

We got ourselves a three bedroom terraced house close to the centre of Ambleside. As in “walk everywhere” close. That made going out in the evenings easy, but it made the parking a bit tricky. It turned out that the house had two decent-sized bedrooms and one that was way to small. That was a bit of a disappointment. Otherwise it had a comfortable but small lounge, and a big kitchen come dining space that was in a converted lean-to / extension on the back of the house. That part was quite spacious. We booked the cottage through Sykes Cottages, and we had to pick up our keys from their office in Ambleside on our way in.

Getting There

Kas had planned some trips out on her bike, and as we don’t have roof rails and because we would want to be different places on different days, we took both cars. Anyway, she had a triathlon event in Wales the final weekend of this trip and she was going straight there rather than going home again.

That made parking difficult because the house only came with one parking permit for the street. It did also come with a free parking pass for car parks in the southern lakes though, which included the town car parks in Ambleside. So we spent the fortnight swapping cars backwards and forewards depending on who was going where and when.

The Caches

As with most family holidays, it wasn’t really about caching. There was a lot more walking up hills than there was caching. I spent one day in Penrith doing nothing but caching, and a couple of brief morning sessions locally. Otherwise there were a few days (nearly half of them) where I didn’t either do many caches or walk up a Wainwright, and hence didn’t find source material for a post on here.

Extras

I don’t mean that to sound like it was a bad holiday though. It was excellent. We had a few days doing things as a family. More so that we had done in the previous couple of years. One walking alpacas, one finding some infinity pools, two of the mountain walking days, and a couple of days of not much at all.

There was plenty of eating out too. Ambleside has a good selection of restaurants, so we weren’t struggling. We probably ate out on more than half of the nights we were there.
