Objectives

Time to write my 2016 Caching Diary. It turned out that I had a bit of a problem with my caching mojo for much of the year. I was also quite busy with work, and therefore more interested in spending the weekends with Kas and the girls. What I did do though, I greatly enjoyed. I went out less often, but enjoyed it more, so it was a good thing to do, consciously or otherwise.

2016 had the lowest number of finds in the year that I’d had since 2012. That was offset by having a number of fantastic individual days and involved some fairly epic locations for finds.

Having said that, I did actually make quite a large number of caching trips, and nearly 1,400 finds can’t be regarded as a poor year.

Highlights

Key highlights of my geocaching year, in no particular order, were:

  • My first Geonord event, held in July in Valenciennes.
  • A family holiday in the Lake District in May and June which turned out to be rather good.
  • Another family holiday in the French Alps, based in Chamonix.
  • A long weekend at the UK Mega Event in Llangollen.
  • A Geolympix mega event right on my doorstep.
  • Another trip to the Lake District in September for a running event.
  • A long weekend in Wales with “the lads” on our first ever November boys weekend.

Monthly Statistics

So here’s a monthly summary of cache finds:

  • January – 132 finds
  • February – 172 finds
  • March – 114 finds
  • April – 128 finds
  • May – 122 finds
  • June – 53 finds
  • July – 144 finds
  • August – 225 finds
  • September – 71 finds
  • October – 114 finds
  • November – 17 finds
  • December – 66 finds

Summary

So there we have it, my 2016 Caching Diary. So what did I actually achieve:

  • A total of 1,358 finds, made on 60 different days
  • Fourteen days ticked off my Shifty Fifty Challenge
  • Two days with over 100 finds and 9 days with more than 50
  • One new country – Italy. This was added while we were on a family holiday in Chamonix.

A year of consolidation, to some extent. Fewer finds than the previous year, but that’s partly because we had lots of family holidays / trips away where we spent time together.
