Another Attempt
The Return of the Moggy, which is absolutely nothing to do with Return of the Mack, which I’ve now got lodged in my brain. Why did I use that name for this post. Never mind. I’m back in the game, running things to keep my swing. Probably also nothing to do with The Cat in the Hat, though I may have wreaked a lot of havoc on the way.
A couple of months back I began my assault on the Moggy series (see Moggy) by walking around the south of Steeple Morden. Today’s job was to finish the series by walking northwards from the same start point, running through Guilden Morden. I parked at Steeple Morden Recreation Ground again.
I’d got 38 caches left on the Moggy series. Added on to that, I needed 21 finds to tick off a Shifty-Fifty day. That should all be relatively straightforward, and because of that I didn’t leave home especially early.
Where is this going?
Clearly, it’s going around this series. Route planning on this day was trickier than the previous Moggy day because the numbered series wibbled and wobbled a bit, but also was interrupted by a bunch of other caches in the villages and off up the roads. That meant a bit of backwards-and-forwards to be done.
My general route plan was to go clockwise. Initially that took me west across fields and onto the road running into the south of Guilden Morden. From here I did an off-piste loop around the village to clear up some church micros, village signs, village halls, fine pairs, and other entries from national series. Pretty much all of them were ryo62’s though.
From here I got back to a clockwise loop that took me north of Gulden Morden around Little Green and Great Green. Great Green could probably be prosecuted under the Trade Descriptions Act, if that was still a thing. This bought me back into Guilden Morden, from where I headed into the fields again to the east.
As I crossed the road on the north of Steeple Morden I was greeted by the undoubted delight of traversing 500 metres of freshly ploughed field. In fact, a tractor was still in the field. The tractor was in the process of making the going somewhat easier, but was only 10% the way through, so it was a harrowing experience for both me and the tractor driver. That field was sufficiently hard going to persuade me not to bother with the series of trads out to the east of the Moggy series. There were seven of them, but it would involve 2km extra of walking at least. So I cut short and headed straight back into Steeple Morden.
Who are you?
Back at the car park, I bumped into a bunch of other cachers. Well, I’d actually bumped into two of them not long after I set off. But here they were in the car park. And they’d noticed the geocaching specific number plate on my car. To my shame though, I’ve forgotten who they were. Probably some combination of idlegit, All Those Boxes and Tinkertree, who were all in the area on the same day. But it was good to finish the day with a short chat with random strangers.
The Return to the Moggy yielded 47 finds when I added one drive-by on my way home.
