Warm Again

Our third full day began with a slow breakfast again. I was up relatively early this time though, because I was going out for a rather longer walk around Nice. The castle is an obvious target from where we were. It’s at one end of the seaside views, and it looked like it would be a good vantage point for looking at the rest of town.

The ladies had again decided it was too hot and they were too tired for anything, so I left them to it.

Along the Promenade

My first jaunt was all the way along the Promenade des Anglais in an easterly direction until it meets the cliff at the base of the castle.

There’s a massive “I Love Nice” sign here on the seafront. Obviously a fine site for a virtual cache. I was happy to oblige.

Around the corner there’s a small harbour and a big car park on the side I approached. Another cache here saw me explaining my actions to two young women. They were standing close by and having a long chat. I didn’t want to appear suspicious, so I just told them what I was doing beforehand. And then we then stood and chatted about caching for a couple of minutes. They probably think I’m mad, but at least they wouldn’t be phoning the police.

Up we go

From here, the next course was to climb up the hill to the castle. What was previously a military citadel is now a public park. It’s also home to a couple of quirky caches.

One is a wherigo, which has to be done for novelty value. Another was a multi that had me running around a bit. The views from the top were pretty good and the park itself wasn’t that busy.

I was grateful that the entrance to the castle that I used had a kiosk selling water. It was warm enough to melt.

Back Downstairs

I left the castle on the north-west corner and picked my way around the top end of the Old Town and eventually to Place Garibaldi. I grabbed another drink here before picking my way back to the flat.

Over the course of the day I’d found a massive 18 caches. To be fair, I knew there weren’t that many caches around Nice, so I made a rod for my own back to some extent. But you have to combine that with the incessant heat, which to be honest made it tough going just to step outside.

Remind me not to go to the French Riviera in the middle of summer again.
