First Day

Our first full day in Nice, and after the exertions in the car on the previous day, nobody was up for much. So I went for a walk to pass the time. We were really close to Nice Old Town, so that seemed like the place to go.

I got out of bed at about 9am and the first thing we did is that three of us went for a walk to a couple of nearby shops to get stuff for breakfast. We found a nice pastry shop and also a supermarket. Our flat was really close to the sea front at the Promenade des Anglais and had a shopping street right behind it. This meant it was easy to find food. That was a good thing, because the flat we had didn’t live up to expectations. Maybe we were just spoiled by the place in Bourg d’Oisans the previous week. The flat in Nice was a bit shabby and the bathrooms were cramped, plus the kitchen was tiny. We decided early on that we wouldn’t be cooking in the flat at all.

So anyway, we chilled and had a slow breakfast.

I Don’t Like Sitting Still

Abount 1pm it was clear that none of the others planned to leave the flat until the scheduled late afternoon swim in the sea at about 4pm.

I’m not really one for sitting around, especially when I’ve paid shed loads of money to go somewhere. So I decided I’d take a bit of a walk and do a few caches. I differ with the rest of the family on that point, especially the kids. That’s possibly because they’re not paying, so they aren’t so bought in to the whole process.

I started on the Promenade and headed east towards the old town. A couple of physical caches weren’t there, so progress was slow.

Place Masséna

It was really kind of hot, so after a brief dabble in the old town I strayed over towards Place Masséna so I could complete a set of labs just to the north.

I have to admit I wasn’t really enjoying it, so I decided not to push any further. So I ambled back and found myself a cafe on the Promenade, where I availed myself of a chilled beverage.

At about 4pm the girls had all gone to the beach for a swim. Not really my scene in hot weather, so I left them to it and went home for a shower.

Dinner

Once we were all cleaned up, we went out for some dinner. I was surpirsed, but the kids both agreed to go try a Vietnamese place. It was a bit “street food” in that it was a tiny place with minimal decor, but the food was pretty good, so a wise choice.

After dinner we took a slow walk back along the Promenade. It was still really warm. Back the the flat, everyone was still tired, so they all scooted off to bed while I sat up with a drink and a book.

This day proved to be foresight of what was to come. I normally keep a holiday diary where I write down everything we did, for the purpose of making blog posts later. There were some days on this week where I didn’t write anything in the diary because nothing of any consequence happened. I don’t know whether it was genuine tiredness, hatred of the heat, or something else, but the kids certainly didn’t want to do anything all week other than sit in the flat and go for a short swim in the late afternoon.
