North-East England

Ah, North-East of England—a region brimming with historic charm, stunning landscapes, and, let’s face it, some truly distinctive accents.

We start with Tyne & Wear, with the vibrant city of Newcastle upon Tyne at its heart. Known for its iconic Tyne Bridge and the famed nightlife of the Bigg Market, Newcastle is a place where the old meets the new. The stunning architecture of the Georgian Grey Street contrasts beautifully with the modernist BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art. And, of course, there’s the Geordie hospitality. Locals are always ready with a friendly chat, even if you don’t understand every word!

County Durham is home to the magnificent Durham Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that looms majestically over the city. It’s a marvel of Norman architecture and has provided the backdrop for many a film. The county itself is dotted with charming towns like Barnard Castle (home of the Eye Test), where you can enjoy a peaceful walk by the River Tees or explore local history at the Bowes Museum.

Moving on to Northumberland, England’s northernmost county, where rugged beauty is the name of the game. Here you’ll find Hadrian’s Wall, a remnant of Roman Britain that stretches across the countryside. The town of Alnwick boasts a castle that might look familiar – it’s served as Hogwarts in the Harry Potter movies. Northumberland National Park offers endless opportunities for hiking and star-gazing, thanks to its status as an official Dark Sky Park. And let’s not forget the wild, windswept beauty of Holy Island (Lindisfarne), accessible only at low tide.

The North-East is also, incidentally, a region that we’ve visited regularly for family reasons.

So here are all the geocaching blog posts I’ve written for the North-East of England, where I’ve had a sort of home-from-home over the last 25 years.
